I was recently contacted by Vanessa Kimbell, the author or Prepped who asked me if I’d like to take part in a baking challenge that she was putting together entitled The Most Marvellous Chocolate Cake Bake Off. We will be making something that looks like this gorgeous creation that Vanessa made.
She was enlisting some local (and some not quite local) food bloggers/cooks to each test out the same recipe but with the ingredients being purchased from different supermarkets to see how they compare on taste/price etc. Does a more expensive/high end supermarket own brand product give a better quality result than the so called budget supermarket? What exactly are the price differences to produce the same end result?
The cakes are to be judged next Sunday, 1st April 2012, by William Sitwell (TV Presenter and Editor of Waitrose Kitchen) as well as Helen from Fuss Free Flavours at Most Marvellous in Northampton and the results will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Northampton at 10am. (She didn’t tell me that bit when she asked me and I agreed! LOL).
Obviously I can’t tell you which supermarket I bagged as the cakes are to be blind tested. The rules are strict and must obviously be adhered to. The cakes will be priced as a whole and per slice, based on each cake being 10 slices.
You can see Vanessa’s post on her blog for more information.
